As many of us know, drugs have become an out of control problem in the White Mountains. “ Crystal Meth” has been a major issue for years. What many don’t realize is that “Heroin” is now saturating our community as well. Yes “Meth” and “ Heroin”, right here in our town. It has become a much larger problem here than anyone realized. There are very few people who’s lives have not been affected by drugs, in one way of another. It may be someone in your own family or in the families of people you know. We all know someone who is or has been addicted to drugs. For the drug addict and his/her family, it’s a feeling of despair and hopelessness. Let’s face it , no one that tries drugs thinks they will get addicted. If they did they would never try it. Most people try it because their friends are doing it, and they seem to be fine; they don’t appear to be addicted. So you try it too. When you realize you are addicted, IT’S TOO LATE. You also realize that your friends are addicted too, you just couldn’t tell because they hid the addiction so well. Now something bigger than you, has control over you and your future. It’s a hopeless feeling! Many parents feel hopeless as well. Parents of an addicted child have no real options, until now. Most rehab programs cost $6000.00 to $20,000+ for a 30 day program. Reality is that many 30 day rehabs bank on the fact that 30 days isn’t long enough, and the addict will likely be back. Thirty days isn’t long enough! The best defense against drug addiction is TIME. You must get “TIME” between the addict and the drug. The longer an addict is away form the drug, the stronger they become. This “time away” must also be coupled with support, quality programming and God. That’s why 30 day programs have a very low success rate, compared to programs like “Teen Challenge” and “ The Dream Center in LA”. They are Christian based, one year in house programs that work! “Teen Challenge” claims an 86% success rate. That’s awesome! As I stated, parents only have 3 options. UNTIL NOW! Option 1: 30 day rehabs with slim statistical chances of success Option 2: Let the addiction take it’s course, while hoping and praying your child survives the addiction Option 3: Call the police, leaving the individual with a criminal record, and another slim chance of a successful life. Whichever option you choose, the addicted persons life will likely be destroyed.
